The Project
The Poppy Project started in Walsham-le-Willows when Jan Hall was asked to knit poppies for a display at the church in Thirsk, North Yorkshire, her previous home.
Here in Walsham-le-Willows, permission was obtained and funding from the Gardens Weekend Trust got the project started. Jan led the project with the village British Legion representative Fiona Glover and people were invited to join and start the poppy knitting and crocheting.
To get the project started 200 red and 40 black balls of wool were purchased along with netting from which to hang the finished poppies. By the end of March 2017 1000 poppies had been made. Over 5000 had been knitted and crocheted by 75 talented local crafters buy the time the church walls were adorned on 29th October 2017. More poppies were produced for a bigger display in 2018.
It has now been decided that no more poppies will be made as there are enough to create a fantastic display each year. A display is created for the week leading up to Armistace Day each year.
The project has inspired many people to either re-start, or take up for the first time, knitting and crocheting. As you will see from the gallery, the results are impressive and arresting, a fitting commemoration of the armistice.
